The 5G network architecture deconstructs the traditional base station to separate the remote radio unit (RRU) or remote radio head (RRH) from the baseband (or digital) unit (BBU). The RRU is one of the most important subsystems in distributed base stations, containing the base station's RF circuitry plus analog-to-digital/digital-to-analog converters and up/down converters. RRUs also have operation and management processing capabilities and a standardized optical interface to connect to the rest of the base station. They increase a base station's efficiency and enable easier physical location for gap coverage problems. A specialist developer of wireless communications equipment approached Artesyn early during the development of its next generation 5G RRU, which enabled Artesyn to use local field applications engineer expertise and quick availability of samples to help this customer create a highly optimized and differentiated remote radio unit. The RRU uses a combination of Artesyn’s ADO300, AVE450B and ADQ500 DC-DC converters to power various functions. The ADO 300 series is a 300W digital interface 1/8th brick, while the AVE450B is a 450W half-brick that provides a 28 volt output for the radio frequency power amplifier and the ADQ500 is a 500W quarter-brick isolated DC-DC converter with digital control interface. As 5G networks are deployed around the world, this manufacturer can be confident that they have a power partner that will adapt to meet their needs.
Mining is one of the harshest environments for any electrical or electronics equipment. A major challenge in this industry is to optimize productivity and manage costs, while safeguarding the wellbeing of staff. As in many industries, data networking is increasingly important in underground mining. It underpins both safety and productivity of the mining operation. A leading provider of technology for underground mine automation is using Artesyn’s LCC250 conduction-cooled AC-DC power supply in its latest mine communications network equipment. The LCC250 series is fully-sealed and fanless, so not affected by the dust and debris of the mining environment. These power supplies are also rugged enough to withstand the temperature conditions, as they can supply the full useable power up to a maximum baseplate temperature of 85°C. The power supply’s performance parameters and Artesyn’s local technical support meant that this mining equipment maker didn’t have to dig around for a solution.
Rail Auxiliary Power Unit
A manufacturer of electrical equipment for vehicle control technology needed a 50 watt isolated DC-DC converter to integrate into a new auxiliary power unit (APU) for metro rolling stock. The auxiliary power unit provides energy for functions other than propulsion, including power and heat to maintain air pressure, provide battery charging and to prevent the prime mover coolant from freezing. Artesyn’s local distributor was able to get things rolling by supplying sample units of the company’s ERM series very quickly. These DC-DC converter modules are designed specifically for railway applications with reinforced insulation, high EMI immunity and isolated baseplates. A competitive price ensured that the customer was happy to get on board.
1U servers provide some of the highest density computing resources in data centers and server rooms around the world. They are particularly useful in colocation scenarios, where the customer might pay by the rack unit so every ‘U’ saved can significantly lower IT service costs. Web hosting, application hosting and cloud service providers are among the users of these compact but powerful computers. A leading maker of high-performance computers, supercomputers and servers is using Artesyn’s CSU550 CRPS AC-DC power supply in its latest 1U server. The industry-standard CRPS form factor already provides a compact footprint compared to previous generation, similar-rated power supplies, but Artesyn’s CSU series takes this to another level with an innovative, high-density shorter design than competing server power supplies. When you only have 1U of space to work with, every cubic centimetre counts, so a fully-featured power supply that takes up less space while remaining cost-effective for the application gives the OEM server designer more to work with.
LED Industrial Lighting
LEDs are replacing other lighting technologies in almost all applications from automotive to street lighting, horticultural to retail, and residential to industrial. A maker of innovative LED lights for industrial applications has selected Artesyn’s LCC600 series fanless and IP65-rated AC-DC power supply for its new ruggedized high power luminaire, which uses a patented cooling method to optimise efficiency of the light fixture. Starting with a power supply that already meets the EN61347-2-13 lighting industry standard and ENEC high quality European mark made it much easier for the customer to secure safety approval for their lighting fixture. Artesyn’s ability to rapidly modify the standard product to suit the customers exact needs, including constant current mode and a small output voltage adjustment, combined with outstanding technical support made this bright idea an easy decision for this customer.
